Welcome to Class Three (Year Five and Year Six)

Welcome back to all of the Year 6 children and a very warm welcome to the Year 5 children.

Our Staff

Class Teachers:

  • Mrs. Baldwin (Monday and Tuesday)
  • Mrs. Chase (Wednesday- Friday)

Class Teaching Assistants:

  • Mrs. Cann (Monday - Wednesday)
  • Mrs. Banbury (Thursday & Friday)

PE

PE days are Tuesday and Thursday. Occasionally throughout the year there will be other PE activity days when the children will be required to attend school wearing the full PE kit appropriate to the season.

PE Kits:

  • Yellow school T shirt
  • Blue hoodie
  • Blue or black plain tracksuit bottoms or shorts of appropriate length
  • Trainers or pumps.

Each week the children will be expected to complete these tasks:

  • Reading of 20 mins 4 times per week. We would expect an adult at home to sign and date these in their child's reading jotter.
  • A reading task of their choosing completed to an expected standard in their reading jotter.
  • Spelling words will be given every 2 weeks and children are expected to practise using Spelling Frame which all children will have a login for at 3 times a week. Spelling homework may also include an activity sheet.

Reading home work is expected to be handed in on Monday morning.

Spelling home work and use of Spelling Frame will be checked regularly.

Other homework tasks may be occasionally set for other subjects.

Home Reading

As part of their regular homework in Year 5&6, your child will bring home a reading book and a 'Reading Journal' which is designed to help them get the most out of their home reading experience. Your child should be spending at least 20 minutes at least 4 times a week on school reading activities. This will normally mean reading their home reading book and talking about what they have read with an adult.

Your involvement is very important here. Please sign and date the reading log every time your child has read and discussed their reading with you. It would greatly help your child's reading progress if you could discuss aspects of the book they are reading. Please ask questions to support their understanding and explanation skills: What happened in this chapter? What have you learnt about the characters? How did they behave/ what did they do? Why did they do that/behave that way? How do you know this? What did the author say to make you think this?

Throughout the term your child will also need to complete Reading Tasks in their Reading Journal referring to the book they are reading - roughly one each week. This will vary from character analysis and plot summaries to looking up any words they did not understand. Reading Tasks will be handed in on Monday of each week.

Spellings

The children will have their list of words that are currently being taught and will be encouraged to continue practising the learned strategies at home and will be assessed regularly in class. Key spelling words can be found below.

Maths

An area for class focus is times tables and telling the time. Year 5 & 6 children should be frequently practising all their times tables up to 12 X 12. The new National Curriculum suggests that by the end of Year 4 children should have instant recall of all of the times tables up to 12. They should also have instant recall of the division facts associated with that table i.e. 21 divided by 7 = 3. Your assistance in this would be greatly appreciated. We will check tables knowledge in numeracy lessons and sometimes more formally.

By the end of Year 4 all children are also expected to be able to tell the time to the nearest minute on both digital and analogue clocks including the 24 hour clock. In Class 3 we use these skills to read, interpret and calculate from more challenging timetables. If your child cannot already tell the time then your support at home will again be very helpful.

Active Learn games will be assigned each week and checked each Monday.

TTRS (Times Tables Rock Stars) is expected to be used regularly to keep up recall speed.

Other activities may be sent home when appropriate. These may include topic research or science investigations.

During the Spring Term, Year 6 children will be given revision books for Grammar and Mathematics. The children are encouraged to use a 'little and often' approach to revision. This revision is not marked however, the children will be regularly asked how revision is going and offered further support as is necessary.

Maths.co.uk Assessment Papers

The spellings from past SATs papers have been grouped in order to focus children's practice. A copy of this can be found below. It would be greatly appreciated if parents continue to monitor and support revision in these areas.
